Richie & Sharon"
Mathew Jones was a player I worked with at SwanseaCity as an 11 year old (Mathew was 11 not me ha ha).
That season was one of the best I had in Football, as a player or Coach.
Mathew's commitment stood out like a beacon that year.
3 or 4 times per week, his parents would drive him the 4 hour round trip to Swansea from Aberystwyth!
Every other week there would be away journeys to Plymouth, Exeter, Bournemouth…Torquay
Then when Swansea reached Academy status...
London, Birmingham...all over the shop.
They kept this going for FOUR YEARS.
He was released by Swansea a couple of years ago, which was hard for them to take after all the effort they had put in…
So many go backwards after knock-backs like this. But this is where Mathew and his family are different.
They weren’t about to let all that effort go to waste.
They started thinking EXPANSIVELY and looking at different options at other clubs…
(So many kids from Swansea get released and just accept their fate)
Matthew soon caught on at Shrewsbury Town where he signed Academy forms.
Now, two years on he’s signed Scholarship forms which means he will be training FULL-TIME with Shrewsbury Town with the next step/ goal being a Professional Contract.
Mathew was featured in the West Wales Paper ‘Cambrian News’ and his Mam sent me the clipping.
This is what Mathew had to say in the article:
"The last six years have been a great experience, to see all the different Academy set-ups.
From August, I will be staying up in Shrewsbury with a host family, and this is where the real work begins. "
In the article, Mathew’s Father Richard said:
"As a family you have to be fully committed
to have a chance of making it professionally,
and a lot of time has been spent on the road.”
Mathew also thanked me and TCSA for the work we have done with him, which is always really nice.
But the message I have for you today is to look at Mathew’s story and see what you can help your son learn about success in Football…and life.
As a family, they always thought OUTSIDE THE BOX.
They came to TCSA for EXTRA training, even while Mathew was still at Swansea.
He did extra work with our Physical Development Coach, James Prosser (That’s the James Mathew’s Mam Sharon asked me to pass on thanks to)…
It was a massive struggle with all the traveling they were doing…
But they always had a PLAN.
